Upper Darby
Township
History

Formed out of Darby Township in 1786, Upper Darby Township was settled by Quakers. Some of the most influential families in the township were friends of William Penn.  One of the first homes in the area is
Sellers' Hall, built by the Sellers family.  A part of it still stands today as
St. Alice Roman Catholic Church Library.  Thomas Garret, a well-known abolitionist, is honored at his home called Thornfield.  This home still stands today on Garrett Road in Drexel Hill.  The Lewis family were the first owners of Collenbrook Farm.  It is the site of the 6th Pennsylvania Historical Marker for Upper Darby Township.  This is located along the Collenbrook Creek in the Aronimink section of the township.
