Penn's Landing
History
|
In 1682, William Penn first sailed up the Delaware River on the
ship called Welcome. It was named that because, in Penn's vision of
his colony, all religions would be welcome to pray as they pleased. He
settled near a tidewater basin called the Dock. When Penn arrived, this area
was slightly inhabited by some landowners in his "holy experiment", also by
Swedes, Dutch, and Indians. Many of these locals gathered to welcome Penn.
About 300 years later, Penn's dream of a tree-lined riverfront promenade
finally became reality. In 1967, the city began to redevelop the area's
docks into a recreation park along the river. Walkways were made, an
amphitheater was also built, a World Sculpture Garden was put in, and
finally, trees were planted along the river.
