South Philadelphia started out as a satellite town of Philadelphia and had small townships like Moyamensing and Southwark. This area had a lot of growth during the Industrial Revolution because of all the immigration from Ireland. It eventually saw its urbanization come to be like that of Philadelphia. The area continued to grow and became an important part of Philadelphia's huge industrial base. It attracted immigrants from Italy, Ireland, Poland and other countries, as well as Black American migrants from the southern United States, in the 19th and early 20th centuries. South Philly's unique and vibrant culture developed over the next several decades because of these immigrants and migrants. |
